Term 4 Learning

Term 4 is going by so quickly!

We have 6 more weeks of school left which is both exciting and sad. Students have worked really hard this Year and we are so proud of each and every one.

This term we are busy consolidating our understanding of concepts and also learning some tricky stuff, such as adverbs and similies in Literacy and borrowing and carrying tens in Mathematics.

We have had our super scientist competition again this term also congratulations to Kobe, Bella (PP) and Gorika (PP), who were selected at a classroom level as the top students.

A big pat on the back to Jessica who won overall Year 1 super scientist!
Jessica presented her experiment to the whole school this morning and has been commended on her confidence and ability to deliver a detailed presentation at such a young age. Well done, Jessica!

I would also like to thank parents for their support with the science superstar challenge. Without your help, events like these become very difficult.

This term we also have dancing lessons, family fun night, presentation mornings, and will have swimming lessons in the last 2 weeks of school. Notes for swimming are coming home today so please ensure you receive it and return it to school before the due date.

Thanks again for your support.

LEARNING JOURNEYS

Dear Parent/Guardians,

As you will be aware we will be opening our doors to parents, guardians and care givers this Tuesday 20th September.

Students came home with invitations and a note came home last week from the school.

This learning journey experience is exceptionally beneficial for both you as parents and guardians and also to the students. We have been working very hard over the last few weeks, creating displays and deciding what activities to include to provide you with an insight into what we do everyday.

Students have decided on the interactive rotational activities and are very excited to teach you how it's done.

If there are any parents who are unable to make it then please let us know so that we can try to organise a teacher/staff member for your child to share the experience with.

The doors will be opened at 2:00pm and remain open until 3:30pm.

Until 2:30pm all students are still under my duty of care. You are able to collect your child before 2:30 if you have finished your learning journey, however, if this is the case, students MUST be signed out and I must receive a slip before I will release them. This is for the safety of students.

I hope to see all parents here on Tuesday afternoon!

Helping to Develop ICT Skills

As you may be aware, this term we were provided with two desktop computers in our classroom to develop ICT and typing skills in students.

It is imperative that students develop these skills as the National Standardised Testing (NAPLAN) will be completed online as of 2017.

ALL STUDENTS IN ROOM 9 WILL BE AFFECTED BY THIS IN YEARS 3 AND 5.

We do not wish to disadvantage students in any way and so the skill of typing is necessary to ensure students are able to complete the test within the given time.

We have started basic typing in class (you have probably seen our persuasive letters on display). It would be beneficial to your child/children to allow them to have extended practice times at home with typing and general computer skills to ensure they have sufficient competence to be successful.

There are some links to typing programs on the school blog site which allow students to practice typing and develop speed and accuracy.

Please take the time to check them our with your child and have a go at home.

WATTLE DAY

On Thursday 1st September it was National Wattle Day.

At Wattle Grove Primary we celebrate this day within the school and community.

With our Room 11 buddies we celebrated Wattle Day by making cards and offering them to others. Students had a great time and their older buddies are fantastic at helping with the tricky bits.

Here are some photos of us having fun with our buddies!

In Literacy we have been focusing on;
  1. Phonics (recognition of sounds in words) -  Bossy 'e' (a_e, i_e, o_e, u_e) like cake, kite, mute, slope, Vowel Digraphs (ai,ay,aw) like rain, play, crawl
  2. Spelling - Controlled R (ar,er,ir,or,ur)
  3. Reading and comprehension
  4. Writing- Narratives
  5. Handwriting - letter formation

NUMERACY

In Numeracy we have done a lot of consolidation work on place value (tens and ones) and addition and subtraction of large numbers.

We are now working on;
  1. Calendar and Time (looking for dates/navigating a calendar and times to the hour and half past)
  2. Mass (measuring and comparing objects weights)

We are so proud of the students and would like to praise each and every one for their continued hard work and effort. It is amazing to see how positive and enthusiastic they are for learning and I hope they cherish this value of learning as they grow.

We would also like to thank you as parents for your continued support. Without you we would not achieve as much as we do.

LEARNING JOURNEYS

Learning Journeys are scheduled for Tuesday of week 10. We are already hard at work preparing for this and students are excited to invite parents and family members into class to share their learning journey so far this year. I hope to see all parents on this night as it is a fantastic experience for yourself and your child.

LAPATHON

A huge congratulations to all the students for their efforts during the Lapathon.

In total Room 9 completed 746 laps! The average number of laps per student was around 30.

All fundraising needs to be completed and returned to Admin... any child who raises over $10 is eligible for a prize.

A massive thanks to Seetha, Winnie and Roshni for their help with the organised chaos of stamping and recording students laps...You deserve a pat on the back!

Thanks to all parents for organising faction t-shirts for students on the Friday. They all looked fantastic!

NAIDOC Week

This week we celebrated NAIDOC week. We went to the BER Room on Wednesday to listen and learn about the traditional Aboriginal (Nyoongar) way of life from Mr. Thom

He spoke to us about the relationships between the Indigenous people and also between the animals in the Australian bush.

It was a great experience and we learnt a lot.

Learning all about different animals

Gorika modelling traditional clothing (kangaroo fur)

Joella and Kiara with a bowl made carved from a tree and a bag made from kangaroo fur

We learnt about weapons used for hunting

We experienced the traditional Aboriginal way of respecting the animals they catch and eat

CLASS DOJO APP

Parents,

At the end of last Term a note came home with students about an app called 'Class Dojo'. You may have had discussions with your child about this app.

As stated in the original note, this app is NOT replacing the school blog and any important events and information will remain in the blog. Please ensure you check it regularly.

The note that came home was a parent login password so that parents can see their child's achievements and areas for growth in regards to behaviour. It also allows working parents to communicate readily with me through the app.

Again this app will NOT replace any of the schools current communication channels and students will still require written notes for absence and vacations etc. It is only for general everyday messages and/or questions.

The app also has a student account attached where students are able to log in and customise their monster which the students love.

The app is working well in class and students are very excited about it! Thank you to those parents

who have already signed up.

For those of you who have not yet signed up for whatever reason, you may like to check it out! if you have misplaced your letter and or are experiencing problems, please come and see me and I will assist you.

WA Day Winners!

As you will be aware, classes celebrated WA Day last term by decorating a door. Admin went around each door display to decide on winners.

Room 9 were one of the winners selected! We were presented with a special class book and each student was given a mini prize to take home at the Week 1 assembly.

Semester 2 Student Councillors!

Congratulations to Kobe and Anjali on being selected to represent our class as Student Councillors for Semester 2.

Thank you to Olivia and Chris for their amazing efforts as Student Councillors for Semester 1.

Anjali and Kobe have some big shoes to fill!

Thursday 30 June 2016

Welcome to the new Room 9 News Blog!

As of Semester 2, Room 9 will be using a class blog instead of a class newsletter. We will be posting pictures of class experiences and information about upcoming events and activities. Make sure you check up on us regularly so you don't miss out!
